Groom speeches are by tradition not humorous. In reality, these are the most serious speech. However, there is a growing trend for grooms to come up with funny groom speeches as these tend to break the monotony of the traditional groom speeches. But how does one add twist to a very serious speech? Below are some suggestions on how to do it.

Do pick up funny and entertaining stories. Nearly everyone has some funny experiences which many people may find quite amusing. It is, thus, possible that you have your own stories to share. So, share these stories. While not everybody will laugh at your joke, it is likely that a really funny, well-delivered joke will give some people in your audience some good reasons to laugh. Be careful to select those that are not in bad taste, though. Don’t mention anything that can embarrass, even if mildly, anyone of your listeners.

Do make use of a really funny one liner. One liners are instant jokes that can somewhat guarantee that some people in the audience would laugh. But, when picking up a one liner, be sure to find those that are not common and already abused. They have possibly heard these common jokes someplace else already. Also, remember not to refer to sexual subjects (this is somewhat the job of the best man) and cliches that refer to the same thing.

Do build-up the momentum for the punch line. The most common mistake with jokes, even at wedding parties and even when they’re delivered by the groom, is that there is little momentum to propel the ready the crowd for the punch line. This is because the groom, for his want to make the people laugh, do so prematurely. If it isn’t natural for you as the groom to be funny, try practicing the punch line well but don’t overdo it. The best advise therefore is to be natural – if you’re not funny, try not overdoing it.

Do try to be creative. Give your listeners something innovative. If the crowd feels that your speech is sounds a bit generic they’d probably prefer to listen to something else. So add color to your speech. There is nothing wrong with using materials that are unconventional.

Do use some old jokes, but remake them. Contrary to popular belief, old jokes can still make some people laugh. One that seldom fails is where the groom reads his speech, rips it off, and tells the crowd it was from his previous wedding which was a failure. If you can successfully deliver this joke, well and good. If not, get another old joke.

Don’t make up an anecdote that never really happened to you. If you can deliver it in a way that it would not sound like a real-life story, then it’s perfectly fine to make up a fake anecdote. But, if you intend to present it as a real experience, it is advisable that you just pick a real anecdote and give it a good twist. People in the crowd will know in one way or another whether the funny anecdote is real or not, so it’s best that you keep yourself from inventing one.

Don’t try to be a stand-up comedian. You can crack a funny line or two through your speech but don’t overdo it. funny groom speeches were created to help lighten up the mood of the audience, not to make a stand up comedian out of you.
