The Rise of the Guitar

The guitar that we know today has been around for a very long time.
The first incarnation of the guitar is believed to have come from Babylon (modern day Iraq). Clay plaques from the period of about two thousand years before Jesus were located with illustrations of figures playing instruments that look like guitars. The story of the guitar is then silent for nearly 2000 years until a burial place was dug up in Rome which contained a guitar like instrument. It was constructed totally of wood and had the same structure of modern day guitars.
The guitar has become one of the most well like instruments and with the development of the internet its now possible to teach yourself how to play guitar. Learning how to play guitar fast is now so simple.
In the Medieval period the guitar developed with a round bodied sound hole and a fat neck. It is not known whether this instrument is of French or German origin.
Spain was the place that the guitar began its most critical stage of development. The ‘Vihuela’ developed 12 steel frets and people began writing tablature for people to play.
The guitar well and truly moved into Europe in the 17th & 18th centuries. Many of the European nobility popularized the guitar and made the guitar and its music develop internationally. It is was during the 19th century that the guitar really developed the shape and modern tuning we see today. This was also the time that guitar playing moved into America and the rest of the modern world.
During the 20th century the guitar really became a household instrument. Guitars and the people who have played them have spanned thousands of years , as well as various cultures. It is a an amazing, satisfying instrument to to be able to master, with lots of understated characteristics.
